This looks really handy

https://almalinux.org/elevate/

Might make the effort to upgrade from CentOS 7 to either Alma or Rocky soon because of this.

@Abu disagree that Ubuntu fell off. I like pretty much everything else about it except for Snap

The UIs of pretty much every other distro don't look good to me, personally

@umer936 Ah that makes sense
>>"One issue I have with both Windows and OS X are they try too hard to tie you into their ecosystems. Windows Phone Companion or AirDrop. Vs on Linux being more agnostic you get KDEConnect which you can add to all your devices, whatever OS they're on. Microsoft has been adding some of those with Windows PowerToys which is cool, but ethically I'm ehhhhhh on bc they're just ripping off the features."

Yes but having a closed eco-system like Apple does also leads to less bugs, and smoother running software.
I would say that due to modern computing power advancements this isn't much of an issue anymore, but it used to be when optimization was a lot more important for a decent lay user experience.
Now tbh my only excuse is Apple has a good trade in system, and the only decent watch.

For reference, I use both plenty on desktop and on servers.

For servers, it's so much better using Linux. Knowing all what the processes are running and stuff like that is important to me. Also, running Docker and Kubernetes, whileBummbersome on Linux, did not have random issues like I had on Windows. I still can't get my Docker to work again on my Windows box due to some HyperV issue.

And for Windows Server? Expensive. I do IT for an urgent care clinic and I migrated their Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system to a cloud provider last year and a core reason for doing so is that the Windows Server upgrade process tied with the EMR upgrades was going to be too expensive and a lot of work.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/pricing. I see they've added Essentials but before they only allowed Standard, which is $1069 right there and you can't even buy it. If I wanted to buy it, I have to go to MicroCenter 3 hours away, but Microsoft expects you to have a "Microsoft approved" business to install it.

For an example of how Windows Server is also garbage, why does it default come with the 3D model viewing software, but not Domain Admin Panel? They've since changed it but the Xbox app even came on Windows Server like <2 years ago. Whose idea was that?

I mean, 0% of the 500 fastest supercomputers use Windows: https://www.top500.org/statistics/list/ lmfao.

I have plenty of Windows management experience but it almost always is harder than it is on Linux. They have added nice stuff like Windows Terminal, so I use that on my work machine (which is Windows).

There's also the diversity of options. Specifically for containers, I use Alpine Linux for some of them. I don't think there's a Windows equivalent. I run Linux on so many things - old Chromebooks, small Linux computers like Raspberry Pis. Windows has Windows IoT (rebranded from Windows Embedded) but it doesn't work everywhere. To counter that, Microsoft released another small device OS, which is based on Linux.

On the Desktop, sure. Windows is fine - good, even. I don't have specific issues with it. I use it for 9 hours a day. And with WSUL, you can now do stuff like run ROS etc. Also things like 3D modeling software like Fusion 360/SolidWorks, games, Cricut Design Space, etc I run on Windows.

OS X and Macbooks are pretty nice. I've used it plenty. Absolutely love the TouchBar. Don't like the window manager (the way it fullscreens is awful).

One issue I have with both Windows and OS X are they try too hard to tie you into their ecosystems. Windows Phone Companion or AirDrop. Vs on Linux being more agnostic you get KDEConnect which you can add to all your devices, whatever OS they're on. So that's why not.

I can see why you're saying what you are, but as soon as you get past the just running "regular stuff on a computer," it's a clear choice IMO. And even for just the Desktop, it's fine. The software I listed above is definitely a pro for Windows, but I don't use those every day.

Nevermind, I just remembered. I upgraded my Desktop to Windows 11 and everything is so BIG. Why? I don't remember asking for Fisher-Price. I refuse to upgrade my personal laptop (dual-booted) or my work laptop to Windows 11 until they give a half-height toolbar. I want the OS out of my way. Windows 10 has half-height toolbar.

@umer936 Why not?
They aren't the total crapshow they used to be anymore
Windows in general has stepped it up significantly, I used to be die hard Linux until the recent interations.
Although I am still looking to move on to a MacBook at some point
