Todd's Film Reviews

Pacific Rim (2013)

Created on 03/19/18 by JasonTodd
With the sequel coming out soon I thought it best to give this one a review too. Plus I'm insanely bored from trying to move to a new place further south that I have literally nothing better to do than write film reviews. Anyways, Pacific Rim is probably one of the best modern examples of a summer blockbuster. The story is simple, the characters are fun or interesting(some of them), the action is exciting, and the CGI is plentiful. Most superhero movies fit that bill as well, but this isn't based on any specific comic I can recall. The cinematography is great with a lot of really cool digital coloring used in some scenes that were surprisingly gorgeous for a movie like this. The music was an exhilarating addition by Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Game of Thrones) that fit perfectly in a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters. Movies like this don't really need much thought put it in while watching it, so I'm glad they didn't do what a lot of blockbusters do these days and focus on trivial bullcrap. Movies like Transformers that think we want to see these terribly written human characters go about their day instead of giant robots being awesome are getting annoying, so this was a good alternative. The action is fun, of course, with Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro and his many many movie monsters doing their job. However some of his humans were not. I don't completely blame the writing, but the main protagonist of the film, played by Charlie Hunnam, was boring, uncharismatic, and seemingly devoid of legitimate personality. The main female, Rinko Kikuchi's character, was better, but not by much. However, Charlie Day and Idris Elba both steal the in their scenes, making much better characters than the main two. This is definitely a fun popcorn film, and it doesn't really try to be anything more. Of course that's not a bad thing at all, it accomplished what it set to accomplish and didn't try to be something it wasn't. I give it a B+ for fun action and music, decent humor and characters, and good cinematography and CGI.
