Todd's Film Reviews

Get Out (2017) +++++

Created on 06/27/17 by JasonTodd
One thing you should know about me before I review this movie is that there are two genres of film that I'm very cautious of: Horror and Comedy. Comedy is very subjective, not everyone has the same sense of humor, so I tend to look for comedies that I think will actually get me to laugh, which are few and far between. Horror is a touchy subject. Most of them are just cash grabs (horror movies don't need a lot of money to make so they have small budgets, and with the amount of people that will watch horror movies, good or bad, it tends to at least double the budget, which is a good profit for a little amount of money). Only the classics such as Shining have ever really stood out to me. This, I can say, is the first horror movie that I've truly loved since the 90s. And it has specks of comedy in it, having been written and directed by funnyman Jordan Peele of the Key and Peele show. Get Out stars Daniel Kaluuya as the black boyfriend of Allison Williams, who's taking him to visit her white parents in a secluded mansion. Just the concept of this sounds ridiculous, and the movie does take time to poke fun at itself. But even with a concept that crazy, this movie takes it far and actually does something with it, unlike other movies (Belko Experiment). It hits all the notes that a horror movie should hit: false sense of security, lack of control, suspense, a moment to breath, and of course some jump scares (but very few). All in all, Jordan Peele has cranked out a masterpiece with his directorial debut, and I'm excited to see a lot more from him.
