Todd's Film Reviews

Wonder Woman (2017) ++++/

Created on 06/27/17 by JasonTodd
I review movies in two different ways: Critically and Personally. Critically means I judge the movie by exactly what it is, how good it's production, writing, acting and everything else is. Personally simply means I review based on what I liked about it. It's the reason why Citizen Kane, which I think is the best movie ever made, isn't my all time favorite movie. The DCEU films so far have been, critically speaking, bad. Man of Steel was an iffy start, Batman v Superman was a jumbled mess, and Suicide Squad was just straight up crap. But personally, I liked them (except Suicide Squad, flip Suicide Squad). Wonder Woman is the only DCEU film so far that I can say is both critically and personally good. The film stars Gal Gadot returning from her role in BvS (which some would argue is the best part of the movie) and Chris Pine as her love interest, Steve Trevor. The film takes place during World War 1 as we see what led Diana to leave her home of Themyscira and enter the world of mankind. I read an article after I'd watched the movie for the third time about how the director, Patty Jenkins, was a huge fan of the Richard Donner Superman movies. I found this article unnecessary, because it's extremely obvious in the film. You'll notice now that I've told you that most of the time when Diana is on the screen, she's the main focus point of the camera, even if she's not the main point of the scene. For you to see and sometimes share her reaction to a moment or a line of dialogue immediately makes her a relatable character, which is why her face is often shown after anything significant (or even insignificant) happens. Gadot's performance is also a huge part in this, as not only does she pull of the fearsome warrior act, but also the innocent and naive fish-out-of-water. Rupert Gregson-Williams also deserves a shoutout for not only making his own amazing score for the film, but for implementing Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL's original Wonder Woman theme from BvS (which is fliping badass). My only complaints about the movie would probably be the third act, which turns the movie from what appears to be a very original origin story, to a generic superhero movie. It's not bad, it just detracts from the film in some ways. But overall, Patty Jenkins did a great job with this movie, and I'm very excited to see what else she has in store for us, as well as for the future of DCEU films.

P.S. Wonder Woman may not be the best superhero movie but that No Man's Land scene may be the best superhero scene ever filmed. It'll take a lot to top that.
