Films to Look Out For - 2016

Batman v Superman - Edited

Created on 12/24/15 by JasonTodd
Considering I'm a die-hard DC Comics fan, I'll try not to let my own bias get in the way of this one. But let's be honest, this movie is probably going to be amazing. Two of the biggest superhero characters of all time squaring off against each other on the big screen for the first time, leading to the very first look at the Justice League on screen. How can this possible go wrong? Arriving in theaters on March 25, 2016, this film includes Man of Steel's returning cast of Henry Cavill (Man from U.N.C.L.E.) and Amy Adams (Big Eyes), alongside Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (The Fast and the Furious franchise) as Wonder Woman, and Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) as Lex Luthor. Thanks to a slightly over-revealing trailer, we know that Batman is afraid of what Superman can do if left unchecked, so he goes after him. However, Luthor decides to cook up something that will take Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman (and others?) to take down.
This movie seems to be getting a 50/50 type of crowd. One half thinks this movie will be amazing, the other half thinking it will suck. While I can see a few problems with the trailer and the film, I don't think it will be that big of a problem in theaters.
With this easily being one of the most hyped up and anticipated movies of 2015, I can only guess that it's box office earnings will be through the roof. Ratings are harder to tell. Given the fact that there's a 50/50 crowd, I'd have to say it may fall around the early 8's on IMDb, with a gross of 1.5-2 billion. I'm definitely going to see this in theaters.

Flip. This may be the hardest review I've ever had to write, but here it goes. In one of my earlier reviews for Star Wars Episode VII I explained the whole 'over-hyping' effect that happens to some movies. This movie is suffering from that effect, big time. Let me start by saying that, contrary to what Rotten Tomatoes will lead you to believe, this movie is not a 29%, and is not a bad film. Is it as good as I hoped or as it could have been? Not really. Is it better than Man of Steel? I'd say they're on the same level (so if you didn't like MoS you may not like this either). But overall it is an enjoyable film, with absolutely beautiful imagery and stunning cinematography. I think it's primary fault is its inability to juggle the many stories it holds and shows all at once. Personally, I didn't mind and went on to love this film, but from the critical standpoint I have to take for this review, it was a bit of a let down. In order to really get into detail I have to right a separate review about this so look out for one. My box office prediction may not be accurate, since (despite its huge opening weekend) this movie is declining rapidly in ticket sales. The current IMDb rating is 7.2 which is under my initial prediction, but is fairly accurate compared to 29%. In conclusion, don't let me or any other critics decide whether or not you should see a movie. Who knows, you might like it, so see for yourself and form your own opinion about the film.
